Oulton Broad Club Meeting -19/07/12

It was to prove an eventful evening for the hydroplane racing class at Oulton Broad with two race stoppages meaning only two out of the three heats were completed. The Area 31 Racing Team suffered mixed fortunes during the race meeting but overall were happy with the 500cc Konig Powered ‘Popoli’ and improving lap times.

Race 1

The individual handicap event saw ten entries and first in to the race were new drivers Jamie Utting and Jamie Ayers both competing with OSY 400cc outfits. They were then followed by another five OSY 400cc drivers, Luke Hugman, Danny Mardon, Jason Freeman, Jamie Marr and James Bowman.

Chris Rix then entered for his first appearance of the season with the classic 500cc Konny powered hydroplane.

Competing with the restored 1992 5 port 500cc Konig powered ‘Popoli’ outfit, Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones then started the race with Paul Jillings following shortly behind, being the scratch boat with the modern 350cc GRM powered Andick hydro.

With David being chased hard by Paul Jillings , he soon unlapped himself from the slower 400cc OSY’s and then passed Chris Rix in a similar 500cc classic hydroplane outfit. Even though he put in some improving lap times David couldn’t quite make up the individual handicap deficit and had to settle for fourth place in the first heat behind the earlier starting OSY outfits of Jason Freeman, Jamie Marr and James Bowman.

After the race Danny Mardon had a nasty accident when the boat picked up and nosed dived. Thankfully Danny was ok but with damage to the boat he was unable to compete for the rest of the evening.

Race 2

The second race saw the drivers start in exactly the same order but this time David got the clear water and was not held up a the Wherry turn by the OSY’s when unlapping himself. Setting off to try and catch them again with Paul Jillings again in hot pursuit the red flag came out because Jamie Ayers and Jason Freeman both stopped at the Wherry turn and the race was deemed too dangerous to continue.

The restart saw David and Paul motoring around Oulton Broad in their 500cc and 350cc powered hydro outfits respectively but this time it was Paul who managed to overtake David as they came past the crowd at Oulton Broad side by side and towards the Wherry turn.

Chasing hard trying to re-overtake Paul the classic 500cc Engine started to die and retiring to the pits revealed a problem with one of the carbs.

Race 3

The final race was very eventful as once again David and Paul were having a battle on their own as they spectacularly weaved inbetween the OSY 400cc outfits to unlap themselves and chase down the leaders.

However the final race was red flagged when Chris Rix hit some rough water while trying to overtake the OSY outfits of Jason Freeman, Jamie Marr and James Bowman which picked the boat up and threw him out of the side.

Again thankfully Chris was ok and there was minimal damage to the boat. However with the light fading there was no time for a re-run and the evenings racing came to a close.
