Oulton Broad Club Meeting - 04/06/2012

The Area 31 Racing Team put in a solid performance on what was a blustery day at Oulton Broad. Team driver David Jones finished fifth, second and first in the final heat to take second place overall behind eventual winner Wayne Turner.

The special Jubilee bank holiday powerboat meeting at Oulton Broad saw testing conditions with a gusty wind blowing across the broad which saw many of the boats get a little flighty in practice.

The outboard hydroplanes were racing in their usual individual handicap format which saw six OSY outfits of Jason Lark, Jason Freeman, Mark Turner, Tony Knights, Scott Gooding and Danny Mardon all competing, along with two faster outfits of Wayne Turner who was in the 350cc Konig outfit and Area 31 Racing team driver David Jones who was competing with the 1992 500cc Konig Powered 'Popoli' hydroplane.

Race 1

With a high tide lapping over the edge of the park front the first race had to be competed on a shortened course for safety reasons and it was the six OSY outfits who got the extended 9 lap race underway at their individual handicap times.

Wayne Turner then entered the race in the 350cc Konig powered hydroplane quickly followed followed by the Area 31 Racing team Driver David Jones who was once again the scratch boat in classically restored 1992 500cc Konig Powered Hydroplane.

With the shortened course it was very hard for both David and Wayne to get the Konig engines fully wound up and working to their full potential in the gusty conditions so David had to settle for fifth spot in the first heat unable to make up the handicap difference on the slower OSY hydroplanes.

Race 2

With the tide going down the second heat was able to be raced on the full course which meant Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones could get the full potential out of the 500c Konig on the longer straights.

Once again David started as the scratch boat in the individual handicap event and soon started unlapping himself from the slower OSY outfits while trying to keep in touch with the very quick 350cc Konig outfit of Wayne Turner, which was proving tricky to do.

As Wayne powered away for the race win it was David who was able to make up the handicap deficit on the last lap catching and passing Tony Knights on the run into the chequered flag to take second place in heat two.

Race 3

The final heat saw the handicaps adjusted slightly so it was Wayne who was the last boat into the race Just behind Area 31 Racing driver David Jones as they both set off to make up the handicap deficit.

With both outfits putting in some impressive laps it was David who was getting the best out of the 500cc Konig powered 'Popoli' as he unlapped himself quickly and set about catching the leaders with Wayne in hot pursuit.

Storming through the field with the restored 'Popoli'

It was a spectacle to watch as the Restored 500cc Konig Powered 'Popoli' and David Jones rolled back the years as he took the final heat race win with Wayne Turner also storming through the field finishing second.

With the final race win along with a second place and a fifth position in the other two heats it was enough for David to bring the Area 31 Racing Team home in second place overall behind winner Wayne Turner, with Jason Freeman taking third place.
