Oulton Broad Club Meeting - 24/05/2012

The Area 31 Racing Teams season finally got underway on a glorious evening at Oulton Broad which saw the team have an eventful meeting finishing fourth overall despite failing to finish the final race.

David Jones & the Area 31 Popoli hydroplane Restoration

After a couple of frustrating weeks trying to get the classic 1964 500cc Crescent engine to behave itself the Area 31 Racing Team decided to have a night out with the restored 1992 500cc Konig powered Popoli outfit.

Race 1

Competing for the Fishing Fleet Trophy the individual handicap race got underway with Jason Freeman, James Marr and Luke Hugman entering the race with their 400cc Yamato outfits closely followed by Peter RIx competing with the classic 500cc Crescent engine.

Paul Yallop was the first of the faster boats to start the race with his GRM 0-250 powered hydroplane but was adjudged to have started early so was penalised a lap. Mark White then followed in the 500cc Hydrocat, followed by Wayne Turner in the powerful VRP 0-250 outfit with Area 31 Racing driver David Jones being the scratch boat on 1 minute 30 seconds plus with the classic 500cc Konig powered ‘Popoli’ hull.

Chasing hard to make up the individual handicap soon saw David unlapping himself and trying to keep pace with the modern 250cc powered hydroplane of Wayne Turner, who was looking impressive and getting used to his new Trombetta hydroplane. On lap four at the famous Wherry turn David tried a little too hard as the front of the boat dug in. Miraculously David managed to keep the engine running despite submerging the whole boat and was able to finish the race in fifth position.

Race 2

After a strong performance in the first race it was Wayne Turner who was the scratch boat, starting just after the Area 31 Racing classic outfit of David Jones.

As they both unlapped themselves from the slower boats to bring themselves on to the same lap Wayne was trying hard to find a way past the Classic 500cc outfit of the Area 31 Racing Team. David used all his years’ experience as Wayne struggled to find a way past as they pushed each other along trying to catch the slower 400cc OSY outfits of Luke Hugman, James Marr and Jason Freeman.

As the boats came out of the final turn it was Area 31 Racing Team Driver David Jones who raced through on the line to take the victory from Jason Freeman with Wayne Turner taking third less than one second behind in what was a breath taking finish.

Race 3

The individual handicaps remained virtually the same for the last race as once again David and Wayne were having a good race between themselves as they unlapped themselves trying to make up the handicap deficit.

Despite starting early Paul Yallop was putting in some quick lap times in the GRM O-250 hydroplane outfit and as the race progressed it looked like being another close finish. This time Wayne managed to get past David as they raced towards the Wherry turn. Chasing hard on lap four David again made a rare mistake and hooked the boat this time at the top turn to which killed the engine resulting in a DNF.

Overall

After three races the overall win went to Jason Freeman in the 400cc OSY with some consistent finishes with the fastest hydroplane driver of the evening Wayne Turner taking second and James Marr taking 3rd.

Despite a DNF in the final heat the Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones brought the restored 500cc Konig powered ‘Popoli’ hydroplane home in fourth place overall.
