Oulton Broad Club Meeting - 29/08/2011

The penultimate club meeting of the season took place on gala day at Oulton Broad with some exciting racing between a good entry of outboard hydroplanes. The Area 31 Racing Team ended the day in joint first place overall with JC Racing's Julian Codling in the group handicap event.

David Jones and the 1973 500cc Konig powered Cabover Hydroplane

The group handicap event meant the modern 250cc powered hydroplanes of Julian Codling, Wayne Turner, Paul Yallop and Kevin Turner would start the race on zero seconds closely followed by the VRP 350cc hydroplane of Brett Duncan. The field would then be completed on 10 seconds with the 500cc Hydrocats of Jamie Grieves and Mark White along with Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones who was competing with the restored 1973 500cc Konig powered cabover hydroplane.

The first race saw Julian get the jump on Kevin Turner and Paul Yallop and with the GRM 250cc powered Trombetta outfit motoring well it was hard to see anyone catching him. Wayne Turner failed to start due to engine problems which meant Brett Duncan was the next boat into the race shortly followed by David Jones and Mark White.

Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones was able to carve his way through the field and catch and pass Kevin Turner, Paul Yallop and Brett Duncan in vintage style but was unable to make up the deficit to catch Julian Codling who took the first heat race win with David coming home in second place.

The second race surprisingly saw both Julian Codling and Wayne Turner jump the gun meaning they were penalised a lap which saw Kevin Turner, Paul Yallop and Brett Duncan occupy the top three positions early on. David however was able to get the best out of the 1973 500cc Konig engine and was again able to catch and pass the drivers ahead taking the second heat race win, with Brett Duncan finishing second and Julian Codling making up the lap deficit to finish third

The final race meant it would be between JC Racing's Julian Codling and Area 31 Team driver David Jones to decide who would win the overall meeting and with Wayne Turner this time getting the start on Julian Codling and holding the lead it was up to David to carve his way through the field once again to try and catch them.

With Julian Codling unable to find a way past Wayne Turner who seemed to be over his earlier engine problems and motoring well, David had to settle for third place in the final race behind Julian in second, and Wayne who took the final race win.

This meant that David and Julian tied overall with 925 points sharing the overall group handicap trophy with Wayne finishing in third place overall.

It was a fantastic evening for the Area 31 Racing Team with the classically restored 1973 outfit performing the best it has for the entire season breaking the 38 second lap barrier for the first time since it was restored by the team
