Oulton Broad Club Meeting - 04/08/2011

The Area 31 Racing Team along with eight other outboard hydroplane drivers were competing for the Redex trophy at the latest club meeting at Oulton Broad. Two race wins from the first two heats put the Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones in pole position to take the silverware home but disaster struck in the final heat.

On the individual handicap event the OSY's outfits of Jason Peek, Jason Lark, Jason Freeman, James Bowman and Tony Knights got the first race underway. Next into the race was the classic 500cc outfit of Chris Rix who was then followed by Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones competing with the classic Konig powered 500cc Popoli outfit. The field was completed shortly after by the two modern 250cc and 350cc outfits of Wayne Turner and Paul Jillings.

David was instantly put under pressure from Wayne Turner in the 250cc VRP powered Andick hydroplane but managed to stay ahead and slowly started to pull away as he un lapped himself against the slower OSY outfits to put himself on the same lap as he caught and overtook Chris Rix in a similar classic 500cc hydroplane outfit.

At the start of the last lap David was just under half a lap behind the leader James Bowman, and as they raced away up the back straight David was catching the OSY outfit very quickly. As they exited the final turn it was a race to the line and David powered past the OSY outfit of James Bowman to take the first heat win on the line for the Area 31 Racing Team.

Heat two was a replica of heat one as the 500cc Konig powered Popoli hydroplane looked very impressive as Area 31 Racing Team driver David Jones took the chequered flag once again on the run into the line just beating James Bowman who had to settle for second place again.

The final race of the evening again looked as though it was going down to the final lap as David un lapped himself form the slower OSY outfits, and set about catching Chris Rix who was motoring well. On the 4th lap disaster struck as David hit a mooring buoy while travelling at speed up the back straight. Pulling of the course and returning to the pits revealed the extent of the damage, a split sponson ending the evening for the team.

The final heat was one by James Bowman who took the overall victory and claimed the Redex trophy with David finishing second overall for the Area 31 Racing Team despite the final heat DNF.

Unfortunately the damage sustained to the Popoli hull is quite serious and will not be able to be raced with again this season which is disappointing as the 500cc Konig engine was really performing well on the classic italian designed hydroplane.
