Oulton Broad Club Meeting – 7th July 2011

The Area 31 Racing team finished second overall and took home the Mike Snowling Memorial Shield for the highest finishing outboard hydroplane on a night of close handicap racing at Oulton Broad.

David Jones and the area 31 Racing Team classic 500cc Konig Powered Popoli Hydroplane

The race meeting was contested by seven boats with the OSY 400cc outfits of Jason Lark, James Marr, Jason Freeman and Tony knights getting the first race underway. Kevin Turner then followed them in the GRM 250cc Hydroplane outfit. Area 31 Racing team driver David Jones then entered the race in the classic 500cc Konig powered Popoli hydroplane, shortly followed by Wayne Turner in the modern 250cc VRP powered Andick hull.

With the handicap times fairly consistent and fewer boats on the water than usual the last lap was an exciting affair as virtually all the boats were on the back straight together as they headed up towards the final turn. It was Kevin Turner who managed to carve his way through the field to take the chequered flag, with David just not being able to catch him in the 500cc Konig powered restored Popoli hydroplane.

The second race was again exciting to watch as scratch boat Wayne Turner was really winding it up trying to catch David in the Area 31 Racing Classic Popoli hydroplane. Wayne just run out of laps to do so and it was David who powered through the field to take second place behind Jason Freeman who’s handicap proved to be just to much to catch.

The final race saw David and Wayne start the race as the scratch boats at the same time and an exciting first turn saw Wayne squeeze up the inside giving the Area 31 Racing Team driver a face full of water as the headed up the back straight at Oulton Broad.

With the 250cc VRP motoring well it proved too much for David to catch Wayne in the 1993 500cc Konig powered hydroplane and he had to settle for fifth place in the final heat.

With a mix bag of results for everyone throughout the evening due to some good handicap racing, it was Jason Freeman who too first position overall, with David taking second and James Marr taking third.

Being the highest scoring outboard hydroplane overall on the evening saw the Area 31 Racing Team take away the Mike Snowling memorial shield, to who was a great ambassador of the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club for many years.
