2011 King of the Broad - Oulton Broad

The Area 31 Racing Team brought out the restored classic 500cc Konig powered Popoli hydroplane for the first time this season competing for the King of The Broad trophy at Oulton Broad. Team driver David Jones brought the classic outfit home in third place overall with three third place finishes.

The famous group handicap trophy has been part of the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club since the 1950's and normally provides interesting racing as rather than having individual handicap times, the competitors are handicapped depending on their engine size meaning numerous boats all start at the same time.

The first race saw a faultless performance from Julian Codling who in turn broke the 250cc lap record on his way to taking the chequered flag with Wayne Turner back on form with a similar 250cc outfit taking second place.

The 500cc outfits had to make it past the group of 400cc Yamato outfits before trying to catch the two very quick 250cc hydroplanes of Codling and Turner which proved to much due to the new generation of 250cc engines having similar power to the classic 500cc Konig engines the Area 31 Racing Team compete with.

However David managed to bring the 500cc restored popoli hydroplane home in third place in the first race.

The second race saw the two 250cc outfits of Julian Codling and Wayne Turner get the race underway, this time it was Wayne who managed to get to the front, and improving all the time in his first season of 250cc racing was able to hold off five times King of the Broad winner Julian Codling to take the second heat win. David again took third place for the Area 31 Racing Team.

The final race would therefore decide who would be crowned King of the Broad and a rare late start from JC Racing team driver Julian Codling meant that Wayne Turner got the clear water to race away and take the final heat win and the King of the Broad title, with Julian trying everything possible to make up the deficit coming home in second.

Although not wanting to rev to its full potential, David was able to bring the 500cc Konig powered Popoli home in third place to take third overall for the Area 31 Racing Team on an exciting evening of hydroplane racing at Oulton Broad.
