Oulton Broad Club Meeting - 26/05/2011

with the 1964 500cc Crescent powered outfit under repair the Area 31 Racing Team decide to give the 1973 500cc Konig powered Cabover hydroplane it's first outing of the season on a blustery and rough evening at Oulton Broad.

The first race saw team driver David Jones start as the scratch boat coming in on a timed handicap after the 400cc OSY outfits of James Bowman, Tony Knights, Jason Freeman, James Marr and the 350cc GRM powered Dickfors hydroplane outfit of team 27 driver Paul Jillings.

With the very gusty conditions making Oulton Broad extremely choppy the handicap was just too much for David too make up during the first race and he brought the Area 31 Racing restored outfit home in 6th Place.

Race two saw the handicaps adjusted slightly and this time it was Paul Jillings in the modern 350cc outfit who started as the scratch boat just behind David, having put in an impressive perfomance in the first race taking the race win on the line from James Bowman.

Both David and Paul soon found themselves on the same lap as the slower OSY 400cc outfits and were having a great race between themsleves. With Paul catching the Area 31 Racing classic hydroplane outfit, team driver David turned tight at the top turn giving Paul a facefull of water resulting in his engine dying momentarily which enabled David to pull away and take third place behind Tony Knights and Jason Freeman, just not quite being able to make up the handicap in the worsening conditions.

The 1973 500cc Konig engine had been improving as the race meeting went on but as the third race got underway, strong winds and heavy rain meant visibilty was so poor the drivers struggled to see the turn bouys on the course and the race was stopped and the remainder of the meeting was cancelled.
